Addis Ababa

Addis is the first taste of the country for all visitors if they arrive by air. Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia, lies on the country's central plateau' on the lower slopes of the Entoto Hills (3200m above sea level). The elevation of the city itself ranges from 2200m-2500m. Despite its proximity, only 9 degrees north of the equator, it enjoys that characteristic Ethiopian highland climate of eternal springtime. Addis Ababa, the name of which means 'New Flower' was founded by Emperor Menelik II in 1887 and in a little more than a 100 years has grown to an enchanting economic and administrative center of the country. Today, it enjoys the status of being the political center of Africa. It houses the Organization of African Unity (OAU), Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and many other continental and international organizations.
